Got a targeted ad for some chronic pain “treatme Got a targeted ad for some chronic pain “treatment” today that was NOT at all science based and costs $600 a month. Naturally, had to explain why I’m so skeptical of the wellness industry in the first place. If you care about “treating the whole person,” then you’d be concerned about the societal problems that contribute to poor health. Instead, the wellness industry just tries to sell overpriced vitamins 🤷‍♀️

The only thing a cold plunge “speeds up” is ho The only thing a cold plunge “speeds up” is how fast I run back to the hot tub 😂

Listen, I LOVE a cold dip, and it *can* be great for sore muscles after a workout. But these claims that it speeds up your metabolism, burns fat, or decreases anxiety are uh… probably a bit overstated. If it feels good and makes you feel good, do it! But if not, there’s no reason to dunk yourself into cold water. As the American Heart Association put it, “you’re not a polar bear.”

Happy skiing pic/unrelated caption time: I broke m Happy skiing pic/unrelated caption time: I broke my toe (I think?) about three weeks ago. I was scheduled to run a half marathon yesterday and I didn’t do it. It’s been a rough time getting back into running after nearly 4 years of injuries and surgeries and I was so incredibly frustrated with this last minute toe problem that I almost just pushed through it and ran anyway. That would have been an unwise decision, and I’m proud of myself for prioritizing healing rather than being hard on myself and making myself do something that would probably be incredibly painful. Instead, I ran the 5k, paid attention to pain levels and ran at a slower pace. (This way I still got the post-race snacks and swag 💁‍♀️) We love ~personal growth!!!!~

In related news: if you know of Bay Area half marathons in May/June… hit me up. #runnerd
It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. In It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week. In the US, 28.8 million Americans will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives. That’s nearly 1 in 10. And that doesn’t count the many of us (me included!) who were never formally diagnosed due to shame, stigma, or barriers to access.

As a teenager, I rarely hesitated to tell my doctor anything about my health. But I never told her about my relationship with food, my relationship with control, and my self-worth. Even though I felt comfortable seeking help for other mental health issues, I still felt like it was my fault, and that I should be able to just *stop* binging and purging. For 5+ years, I let my relationship with food rule so much around me.

And even now, I don’t talk about it much. But I’m breaking my silence this year because I believe that the only way we break this cycle is by talking about it. By normalizing it. By calling out diet culture. By recognizing that eating disorders don’t develop overnight, but that they are enforced and normalized by all of US. Through negative body talk. Through restrictive or “clean” eating. Through diets, through beauty standards, and through how we perceive what it means to be “healthy”.

My history with disordered eating is a major reason why I care so much about the toxicity of wellness culture. We must do better for each other, and for future generations. #nedaweek #edawareness
Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️❤️ just a few t Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️❤️ just a few things I love talking about here… sharing my love for chocolate, science, birth control, bread, and mythbusting.
Quite a few new people here over the last week, so Quite a few new people here over the last week, so I figured I’d introduce myself 🎉

My name is Al, I’m a law student and former scientist. I love to run, eat, ski, be outdoors, and drink wine. I’m passionate about evidence-based practice in the wellness industry because I’ve dealt with multiple chronic conditions and rare diseases, and SO MUCH “wellness” information out there is targeted towards selling people things they don’t need and that don’t help. I also believe there’s room to critique the pharmaceutical industry (and ESPECIALLY the American healthcare industry), and that critiques of these don’t necessarily mean that the “alternative” side of things is a better or safer option. I hope to educate, connect, and share what I gain from digging through TONS of research.

I am trying (!!) to be more active on Instagram but where you’ll really find good info is in digging through my blog: girlsloveevidence.com 👩‍💻 Thank you to the 1000 of you who now follow me- I look forward to your questions and dms! If you see something that you’re curious about, send it to me, and I’d love to read into the research. #scicomm #wellnessthatworks
